Roboat - Alderman Visit

When Are Self-Sailing Ferries Finally Mooring in Amsterdam?

Roboat met with Amsterdam city leaders to explore how self-sailing ferries could ease congestion, boost connectivity, and enhance safety and comfort across the IJ River and city canals.

Here’s What We Discussed with Gemeente Amsterdam

On May 23rd, 2024, representatives from the City of Amsterdam stepped aboard our automated vessels to experience firsthand how Roboat’s technology is transforming passenger ferry operations. Together, we looked at how auto-sailing ferries could help improve transport across the IJ River and within the city center.

The conversation focused on how automated ferry routes could improve connectivity, ease congestion, and offer a practical alternative to traditional transport. With the city’s canals already central to urban mobility, vessel automation has real potential to enhance safety, efficiency, and comfort on the water.

A big thank you to the key representatives who joined us: Melanie van der Horst (Alderman for Traffic, Transport, Public Space, and Water), Menno Schoonderbeek (Transport Manager, GVB Ferries Division), Diederik Basta (Smart Mobility Program Manager), Willem van Heijningen (Strategist for Mobility), Roy Tjin-Tham-Sjin (Director of Public Space Enforcement), Erik Grootscholte (Program Manager), and Zwanet Van Lubek (Managing Director, AMS Institute).

Their enthusiasm and openness to innovation left us energized and optimistic about what’s ahead. We’re excited to keep the conversation going and explore what the future of automated urban water transport in Amsterdam could look like, together.
