Japan’s Digital Minister Kono Visits Roboat

Japan’s Digital Minister Taro Kono visited Roboat in Amsterdam to explore how our autonomous navigation technology is helping digitize and decarbonize urban water transport, aligning with shared ambitions for smarter, more sustainable cities.

Roboat’s role in automating water transport through smart navigation technology

As part of his European tour on digital innovation, Japan’s Digital Minister, Taro Kono, visited Roboat in Amsterdam on May 1, 2024. During a tour of the city’s iconic canals, he got a firsthand look at how our automated navigation technology is helping shape the future of water-based mobility.

Joined by Amsterdam’s Chief Technology Officer, Ger Baron, Minister Kono experienced firsthand how Roboat’s to experience how Roboat‘s automated navigation technology feels when deployed on Amsterdam’s unique waterways.

Roboat‘s tech not only offers efficient automated sailing solutions, but it also contributes to CO2 emissions reductions within commercial water transport operations, closely aligning with Amsterdam’s vision for emission-free urban transportation

Minister Kono was particularly interested in Roboat’s potential to digitise the urban water traffic by providing a scalable, eco-friendly solution. Our discussions highlighted the shared goals of Japan and the Netherlands in digital mobility and smart urban solutions.

It was an honor to demonstrate how Roboat, developed in collaboration with AMS Institute and MIT, is paving the way for cities to integrate automated vessels into their transport networks.

Special shoutout to the Nippon Foundation MEGURI2040 Fully Autonomous Ship Program for supporting innovation in this space!
